Powered by Xilinx Spartan 3 and supported by PCI Express IP core available through HiTech Global, the S3-PCIE board  is an ideal platform for development and evaluation of PCI Express based designs. The S3-PCIE board is supported by series of modules populated with Genesys Logic, Philips, or TI External PHY chips.

Features:

• Populated with Spartan 3 (3S2000)
• DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMM. The board is shipped with a 256 MB DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMM. The board can support up a 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMM (a custom version of the PCI Express Reference Design is needed to support any size other than 256 MB)
• x1 PCI Express Connector
• Expansion Card Connector. The Expansion Card Connector is high-speed, impedance-controlled connector, Samtec part number MIS- 095-01-L-D-K. The Expansion Card Connector can be used to attach an application-specific expansion card. An optional expansion card enables the PCI Express Development Board to implement a complete three-port application (PCI Express Port, SDRAM port, custom port). The optional ASIC Emulation Expansion Card contains two large FPGAs enabling it to be used to emulate an ASIC. The PCI/PCI-X Socket Expansion Card has a standard 64 bit PCI/PCI-X socket enabling a PCI/PCI-X card to be connected to the PCI Express Development Board.
• Loopback Connector pluggable into the Expansion Connector. The Loopback Connector is used to test the Expansion Connector during the board self-test.
• PHY Daughter Card Connector. The PHY Daughter Card Connector is high-speed, impedance-controlled connector. It enables Philips, Ti, and Genesys Logic PHY Daughter Cards contained a PCI Express PHY to be connected to the board.
• Cable Header. The Cable Header can be used for connection to a logic analyzer or other system board. The board comes with a Loopback Cable which plugs into the Cable Header. The Loopback Cable is used to test the Cable Header during the board self-test.
• External Power Headers. The External Power Headers enable the board to use an external power supply instead of being plugged into a PCI Express slot on a motherboard. An external power supply is connected via the 12 Volt Header and the 3.3 Volt Header 
• JTAG Connector. The JTAG Connectors is used to program the FPGA Configuration PROM or directly configure the Spartan-3. The ChipScope tool also uses the JTAG connector.
• Power Jumper. The Power Jumper selects the I/O voltage for the Expansion Connector Signals. The EXP* signals are the Expansion Connector signals.
•  FPGA Configuration PROM. The FPGA Configuration PROM is located underneath the SDRAM SO-DIMM. A XCF08P-VO48 Configuration PROM is used to configure the Spartan-3 2000. A XCF16P-VO48 Configuration PROM is used to configure the Spartan-3 5000.
• Serial Connector. The Serial Connector connects to the FPGA through a RS-232 Line Driver/Receiver.
