RF Front End  for HTG-ZRF8 or HTG-ZRF16  Xilinx ZYNQ UltraScale+ RFSoC platforms

 

The RF Front End (RFFE) is a 5.5 - 20 GHz bandwidth, eight input channel (down-converting), three output channel (up-converting), circuit designed to interface with the newest GHz bandwidth ADCs and DACs like those in the Xilinx Zynq RFSoC found on the HTG-ZRF8 and HTG-ZRF16 boards. The RFFE is specifically designed for low-noise, low-distortion, signal conditioning with high channel-to-channel isolation so that it in no way degrades the intrinsic performance of the ADCs and DACs on the HTG boards. The RFFE has separate LO generation/distribution for the Input and Output channels which are phase locked to any user supplied reference from 100 MHz to 20 GHz. Great care has been taken to keep the LO jitter to a minimum (<40 fs integrated jitter [100 Hz 100 MHz] @ 15 GHz). Likewise, custom shielding and careful layout minimize channel-to-channel cross talk to under 80 dB. Lastly, power supply noise is virtually eliminated by the use of the latest generation of low noise LDOs and several layers of decoupling.

As an option the RFFE can have active temperature stabilization (0.5C) to minimize phase drifts. An in situ calibration board is also sold that can be used to normalize variations in gain and phase across all eight Input channels over the full bandwidth. Components, such as filters, cables, or attenuators, placed between the calibration board and the RFFE will also be leveled. Lastly, the RFFE can be assembled with a wide variety of anti-aliasing (down-conversion) and reconstruction (up-conversion) filters to suit the customers needs.

The RFFE is designed to fit in the front of a standard 19 2U chassis. All RF and signal connectors are SMA and cables are used to connect to the ZRF8 and ZRF16 boards. A high quality 100 MHz OCXO (Wenzel Sprinter Premium or Citrine Gold) with a minimum output level of +18 dBm is highly recommended to achieve the lowest noise results. The OCXO also provides the reference clock for the RFSoC ADCs and DACs thus ensuring their optimal performance.
