3rd Order Stereo Digital Audio Sigma-Delta Modulator IP Core

Overview:

The CWda30 is a 3rd order Stereo Digital Audio Sigma-Delta Modulator.  The CWda30 has the Coreworks Audio Parallel Interface (CWAPI) for the input audio data, which permits bridging to other interfaces: I2S, SPDIF, AMBA, PowerPC (CoreConnect ™).

The digital audio data should be presented at the input at the audio sample rate Fs. Each input channel consist of up to 24-bit Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) audio samples.

The master clock signal mclk must be synchronous to the audio sample rate Fs, and a 256X over-sampling rate applies. In order to produce analog signals the core needs an external analog filter and possibly power amplification before connecting to speakers.

The CWda30 features a third order digital sigma-delta modulator (SDM) proceeded by a 32X interpolation filter to produce the bitstreams at the sdm_left and sdm_right outputs. These one-bit signals have a bit rate that equals the mclk frequency, contain the audio data and quantization noise shaped to occupy the high-end of the frequency spectrum.


Functional Description:

Interpolator: Provides 32X over-sampling rate to the input of the Sigma Delta Modulator (SDM). The interpolator is a multi-stage filter which increases the input sample rate gradually. Its purpose is to reduce the noise level at the input of the SDM.

Sigma Delta Modulator: Produces a one-bit output for each of the channels (stereo). Spectrally
shapes the quantization noise to high frequencies, leaving a low noise level in the audio band.
